1 in 4 of the population will be affected by a mental health problem in any given year!
As well as the many physical health benefits, horse riding also has psychological and social benefits as it has been found to stimulate mainly positive psychological feelings. Horse riders are strongly motivated to take part in riding by the sense of well-being they gain from interacting with horses.
This important positive psychological interaction with an animal occurs in a very few sports. Being outdoors and in contact with nature is an important motivation for the vast majority of horse riders.
More than 80 percent respondents to a questionnaire commissioned by the BHS, reported that horse riding made them feel ‘quite a lot’ or ‘extremely’ cheerful, relaxed, happy or active. Data suggests that horse riding can play a role in managing negative feelings relating to anxiety and depression.
These phychological benefits are recognised by West Leicestershire Mind who are working with SEC to promote Horse Riding as a therapy for those with Mental Health Issues. Download the BHS Report here for more details.

Jessica White has been riding with Somerby Equestrian Centre for a few months and before she started she struggled to talk and interact with others and her overall confidence was very low.
Since having regular weekly lessons, Jessica loves having a new sporting activity and giving her a new routine. The interaction she now has with the instructor and horse is now paying off in other areas, where as before Jessica could not speak to strangers. Jessica is now volunteering in the local mind shop and helping others wherever she is able to. Jessica quotes;
I can recommend Somerby Equestrian Centre to anybody who struggles with confidence and interaction. They have helped me so much and I never thought I would be able to do what I am achieving now.
